Today my coworker Alice said she couldn’t wait to get home and play Mass Effect 3 and how that is all she has been doing lately.

I told her how wonderful, adorable and super cool that was and had to refrain from telling her that I loved her ~~I really like it when I meet girls that like video games, don’t ask me why. It is an attractive quality for our potential friendship. That might be weird but whatever~~.

She is super too and to me that the fact that she is so into video games made her that much more awesome.

I’M SORRY BUT THIS REALLY PISSED ME OFF AND I NEEDED TO VENT.

So I liked this page last year for the shits and gigs, as you do. I found it funny, and let slide the few sexist posts.

Only recently- and after I got a tumblr- did I really start to notice the abundance of rape, sexist and racist jokes appearing on my news feed. And it pissed me off.

I said nothing, however, because what could I do? Send in a message to the page and get labelled a whore and a slut by the Admins as I’ve seen so many people do?

Then this motherfucking gem popped up.

I usually don’t get involved in these sorts of things; if I do my comment gets lost more often than not and goes unnoticed. But I had to comment, I really had to.

I thought my argument was valid and whole, and I was actually rather happy when he admin directly replied to my comment.

I narrowed down my five favourite games ever and posted them.

Of course, I got beaten and labeled down once again.

When I asked for a rational clarification of his definitions of “casual” and “core” he did not reply. It was only when I directly insinuated the bias of his claim did I get a response.

“A feminist I see. No arguments need to be made. Good luck with getting them eggs fertilized”

Note the use of “feminist” as an insult.

I have had my fair share of gender specific hate regarding gaming. I get told I am a fake and a bitch if I get a high score; I get told to “suck a dick because you are better at that, bitch” if I get a low score; I get told to “get back in the kitchen, slut” without any prompt at all, simply because I have a vagina.

I am beyond sick of this. I hate the fact that if a male who hypothetically plays a few hours of CoD can be easily called a gamer by the wider community but I if were to say that I was a level 34 on Skyrim I would immediately be called a fake geek girl, a casual gamer and a liar.

I hate the fact that, even though 45% of gaming consumers are female, developers and publishers still believe that there is not a large enough demographic for female protagonists.

I hate the fact that most women in video games are no more than sexulised objects in skimpy clothing.

I hate the fact that I cannot enjoy a game without being labeled and branded because of the fact that I posses a vagina and not a penis.

At what point did World of Warcraft become casual? I can’t wait to inform my friend the WoW player that he’s only a casual gamer.

How the fuck is “what are the best games of all time” a standardized question?

Three things s about this post:

1) I’m a male, and my top five games of all time are Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Bioshock Infinite, Pikmin 2, and Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver. I’d argue that my taste in games is a lot more casual than this woman’s. Does “Badass Ed” think that all casual gamers are equally loathsome? I doubt it. Are all female gamers casuals? Not sure. Is this confusing web of misogyny not worth understanding? Probably.

2) I say this about every post like this, but this is another case of a problem created entirely by white dudes caring too much about things other people do. Why does this burgerbutt care about what games other people play? Let people enjoy what they want, Edward.

3) As a general rule, people who use fake names on Facebook are enormous assclowns who should be avoided at all costs.

This is their facebook, by the way, and they’re getting worse now, having posted a huge rant about how feminism is fake and feminists “enable pedophilia” somehow.

So I just need to get this off my chest:

For me David Kawena from Lilo and Stitch is the ultimate Disney prince because he is there for Nani AND Lilo and even Stitch despite everything that’s going on in their lives. They’re going through some tough stuff. Their parents die and all of the sudden Nani has to be a mom to her sister who is socially awkward and depressed and that’s hard enough as it is and then she gets her this ‘dog’ and everything gets harder and even though she can’t return David’s feelings he’s still there for them through everything. Even aliens. He’s amazing. I was watching Lilo and Stitch with my niece the other day and I cried watching David go through it all. He is the perfect guy. Like I just get emotional thinking about him.

Imagine if you had someone like David in your life - male or female. You would feel like a prince/princess even if you were living with next to nothing.

David is the ultimate Disney prince - even though he isn’t a Disney prince. He should be considered one.

Disney rant - over.

Also, this is an example of a dude who, yes, has a crush on his female friend but ISN’T a ‘Nice Guy’.

Here’s why I personally love David:

Right after the four of them go surfing and Lilo almost drowns, there’s a heartbreaking scene where Bubbles informs Nani that he’ll be taking Lilo into foster care in the morning. With Stitch at his feet, David watches Nani walk off with Lilo, knowing that she’s going off to tell her sister the reality of their situation. He mutters something to the effect of, “everything was fine until you came along”.

The context of the scene is such that Stitch believes David is talking to him (Stitch is one of our two POV characters, and the camera angle is from Stitch’s POV). But David doesn’t know that Stitch isn’t a dog, and he’s never shown any inclination to talk to Stitch before this moment. He doesn’t even look at Stitch when he says those words, either.

Meaning it’s most likely that David is talking to himself at this moment. That David believes Nani was managing just fine in taking care of her sister until he came into the picture, and distracted her from what she should’ve been focusing on (which, if you recall, was the reason Nani told him she couldn’t go out with him in the first place). He blames himself for Lilo being taken by the state, for Nani losing what little she had left, when she’d already lost so much. In David’s mind, because he loved her, Nani lost everything.

So what does that beautiful little unicorn do?

He goes out and finds her a job. The one thing he knows Nani needs to keep Lilo, the one thing she couldn’t do on her own, the one thing she’d given up as impossible. And he does it because he feels that he has done her wrong, that this is something he needs to set right, and because she demonstrably can’t do it for herself, but also because he needs to prove to himself just as much as her that his love doesn’t break families, but make them.

David’s young. Maybe he’s kinda dumb. Maybe he coasts by on his good looks and charm. Maybe he runs from responsibility, and maybe he blames himself for all the wrong things. And maybe he’s broken, just as much as Nani and Lilo and Stitch are. But he’s also kind and patient, and generous with what few possessions he has; and he’s warm and devoted and hopelessly yet realistically in love with Nani in a way that few Disney princes ever are. And when he and Nani get together in the end, it doesn’t feel like some sweeping fairytale romance but like a family reunion; like two ducklings crying out, I’m lost, and finding each other at last.

and it was supposed to be a dark red brown color but it turned out red, but not a vibrant red (the picture doesn’t do a really good job of showing it, which is weird because the color of this same picture on my phone is different but whatever).

I like it, even if it isn’t what I was expecting.

And work didn’t say anything to me about it today so that’s good. Fingers crossed.
